Sunday at Salt Free: A Little Breathing Room Before the Holidays
November 1, 2026
There may still be a bowl of Halloween candy on the counter, and someone is probably sorting through it for their favorites. It’s only the morning after, after all. There’s no hurry to put everything away.
November has arrived, but that doesn’t mean we have to jump straight into Thanksgiving menus and holiday shopping. There’s a little space here to enjoy autumn just as it is.
This Sunday, we’re keeping things simple: a pot of mushroom soup, a comfortably set table, and time to sit down together. And if a favorite piece of Halloween candy finds its way into the afternoon, that feels perfectly fitting, too.
A Slower Start to November
People tend to treat November as the official start of the holiday rush. Calendars fill up, shopping lists get longer, and suddenly we’re planning meals and gatherings weeks.
But the first Sunday of November deserves a little attention.
The leaves are still falling, the air is getting cooler, and there’s something especially nice about spending an afternoon at home without a long list of things to get done.
Maybe it’s a walk outside, a favorite book, or simply having the time to prepare something good for lunch.
Sometimes the simplest Sundays are the ones we enjoy most.
From the Kitchen: Homemade Mushroom Soup
This week, we’re bringing back a comforting favorite from the Salt Free kitchen: our homemade Mushroom Soup.
Mushrooms have a wonderful way of developing rich, savory flavor when you give them time to brown. Add a little garlic, fresh thyme, and a splash of white wine, and you have the foundation for a soup that’s deeply satisfying without relying on added salt.
One of my favorite things about this recipe is its simplicity. A small Yukon Gold potato gives the soup its creamy body, so you don’t need heavy cream or complicated ingredients.
You can blend it until completely smooth or leave a little texture, depending on how you like your mushroom soup.
Served warm with a slice of no-salt-added hamburger rolls and a simple green salad, it’s the kind of lunch that makes staying home feel like a treat.

For the Table: Comfortable Autumn Gatherings
A beautiful table doesn’t need to be elaborate, especially on a Sunday afternoon.
For this week’s table, we are keeping the colors soft and natural, with warm neutrals, simple dinnerware, and a few seasonal touches.
A linen tablecloth or runner creates an easy foundation. Add comfortable soup bowls, everyday flatware, and cloth napkins, and the table already feels inviting.
A small arrangement of autumn branches or a few miniature pumpkins can bring in the season without making the table feel overly decorated.
And while candles are always lovely, natural daylight is just as beautiful for a relaxed Sunday lunch.
The goal isn’t to create a perfect table. It’s to make an everyday meal feel a little more special.

When it comes to making homemade soup, a handful of reliable kitchen tools can make the process easier.
An immersion blender is especially useful for soups like this one. It lets you control the texture right in the saucepan, whether you want a smooth finish or something a little more rustic.
All-Clad Stainless Steel Skillet
A wide stainless steel skillet gives mushrooms the space they need to brown properly. It’s a versatile kitchen essential that works well beyond this recipe.
A sturdy soup ladle is one of those simple tools you use again and again, especially during the cooler months.

For a comfortable autumn table, I like pieces you can use throughout the season rather than decorations that work for only one holiday.
Neutral-colored ceramic bowls make everything from homemade soup to a casual pasta dinner feel welcoming.
Soft linen napkins add texture and warmth to the table without requiring a formal setting.
A neutral runner provides a simple backdrop for everyday meals and can easily be dressed up for special occasions.

Enjoying the Space Between Holidays
In just a few weeks, Thanksgiving will be here, followed by all the celebrations that make the end of the year so memorable.
You'll have plenty of time to plan menus, set holiday tables, and think about everything that comes next.
For today, though, I’m happy to enjoy November exactly where it begins.
A warm bowl of soup, a comfortable table, and a little breathing room before the holidays.
And perhaps one more piece of Halloween candy.
