Thursday Tip: Invite Kids Into the Kitchen This Fall.
As fall cooking begins and the holidays approach, children often become curious about what is happening in the kitchen. Inviting them to participate can take a little extra patience, but it also gives them an opportunity to learn where food comes from, how meals are prepared, and how flavor can be created without relying on salt.
Children do not need to prepare an entire recipe to feel involved. One manageable job that matches their age and ability is often enough to make them feel like an important part of the meal.
Start With Simple Kitchen Jobs
Younger children can rinse fruits and vegetables, tear leafy greens, add premeasured ingredients to a bowl, or arrange food on a platter. They can also help strip tender herbs from their stems or stir ingredients that are cool and safely positioned.
As children become more comfortable in the kitchen, they can measure dry ingredients, whisk dressings, mash cooked vegetables, and help assemble simple dishes. Older children may be ready to read a recipe, gather the ingredients, prepare a salt-free seasoning blend, or assist at the stove and in the oven under close adult supervision.
Age recommendations are only a starting point. Choose tasks according to the individual child’s maturity, coordination, and ability to follow directions, and provide appropriate supervision throughout the process.
A Tool That Helped My Son Participate

When my son was younger, I used a kids’ knife set with him, and we still have it. It gave him a way to participate in food preparation while helping him become more comfortable and confident in the kitchen. The kids’ knife set we used is still available on Amazon if you’d like to see it.
Using a child-appropriate tool allowed him to practice cutting softer foods while I worked beside him. The goal was never to have him work independently. It was to give him a genuine job and help him feel included rather than simply asking him to watch.
A children’s knife set does not replace adult supervision, and the appropriate tasks will depend on the child. However, the right tool can make it easier for children to participate safely and meaningfully.
Teach Flavor Beyond the Salt Shaker
Cooking with children is also a natural opportunity to show them that flavor comes from much more than salt.
Let them smell fresh rosemary, basil, or thyme before adding it to a dish. Invite them to squeeze lemon juice over cooked vegetables, stir garlic into a sauce, or combine spices to create a salt-free seasoning blend. They can taste a dish before and after adding citrus, vinegar, or fresh herbs and begin to understand how each ingredient changes the flavor.
Older children can help compare food labels and check the sodium content in broths, canned vegetables, sauces, and packaged seasoning mixes. This is not about making food feel frightening or restrictive. It is simply a practical way to teach them that products that look similar can contain very different amounts of sodium.
Easy Fall Jobs for Young Cooks
Fall and holiday cooking offer plenty of ways for children to help:
Wash apples, pears, and root vegetables.
Scoop seeds from pumpkins or winter squash after an adult cuts them open.
Measure herbs and spices for a salt-free seasoning blend.
Tear greens for a salad.
Whisk together a homemade dressing.
Arrange the vegetables on a baking sheet before putting it in the oven.
Garnish a finished dish with fresh herbs.
Help set the table or arrange serving dishes.
Not every task needs to be completed perfectly. A little spilled flour or an unevenly arranged tray is often part of the experience.
Bringing children into the kitchen requires time, supervision, and realistic expectations. It may not make dinner faster today, but it can help children become more capable, curious, and confident around food and create traditions they will remember long after the meal is finished.
